How many years have you been teaching?
I have 20+ years of teaching experience in two Forsyth County Schools and the private sector as well.
What programs do you use as a tutor?
I use multiple research-based intervention programs and strategies in my tutoring. Some include Orton Gillingham, Kendore Learning, Envision Math, Reading Horizons, Handwriting without Tears, Zones of Regulation, Reading Plus, Aims WEB, and many many more.
What should I do if I am worried about my child’s progress at school with reading, math, or writing?
If you are worried about your child’s progress in academics you should schedule a session for me to sit 1 to 1 and test your child. This time will be used to see where the deficits are in the educational background. After a few sessions and working with your child, we can schedule a meeting via Zoom or Teams to discuss specific goals and plans you would like to include. The most success is seen with biweekly sessions for specific skills.
How do I know if you are the best-fit tutor for my child?
Being in a diverse learning style classroom has given me an advantage that most other tutors do not have. I have more expertise in what a content-driven classroom looks like and what expectations are placed on children in each grade level.
I will work with your child to find what is the best-fit intervention and or strategy in the content needed.
If for some reason I am not a good fit within 5 to 6 sessions for your child, you can email me and we will find a solution. If I can not adjust my curriculum to your child’s needs, I will gladly send you the names of other tutors that I recommend. I do not take this personally as I want your child to have the best experience and learn from what best motivates them!
Please do not judge the content speed or accuracy of teachings off less than 5 sessions as it takes time to learn the correct placement and where to dig deeper in the content areas being tutored to best fit your child.
What is my child doing in a tutoring session?
In a typical tutoring session, your child will be engaged in fun learning activities through games and multisensory research-based interventions. They will be working toward individualized learning goals.
You will see a lot of repetition and review. The best practice of going back to what was covered and practicing the same way is key. I will review, lead, model, teach, play. Then repeat. Your child should enjoy this time but also be ready to listen and learn.
I do use rewards and incentives and track with notes on each session.
Parents are welcome to use a pre-set session time to have a “Tutor Talk” if they would like ideas on how to practice or be updated on strengths and goals.
Why Tutoring & how many sessions will be needed to see improvements?
Tutoring is the best way to get independent attention and practice. I can help children work through the challenges they may be facing and give them the tools they need to improve their understanding of the material. This will build confidence in test taking and strengthen understanding of the material so that daily homework isn’t such a chore.
Children learn at different paces making this question hard to answer.. Depending on the skills being taught and the academic level your child starts at will determine how long they should consistently see a tutor. In the diagnostic pre-meetings, I will test levels and set goals. Where your child’s independent learning level starts will play a huge part in the number of sessions your child will need to catch up and or gain the skills needed to dig deeper into the why and the how of the content instead of the memorization.
There are multiple steps in tutoring and consistency is key. You will not see gains in limited numbered sessions. Tutoring is more like a part-time school helper to catch up, keep learning, and build skills and confidence in academics independently. There will be limited benefits if your child learns one topic and stops attending sessions.
****THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF TUTORING IS REPETITION AND REVIEW.****
How much do you charge for tutoring? Contact me for more details.
Rates for tutors fluctuate with years of experience and degrees held. I have 2 bachelor’s degrees and a master’s degree in addition to 20 + years of experience. I am also highly trained in reading interventions and hold endorsements for Reading, Gifted, & SPED.
I only take one-hour clients as I build in an ice breaker/ chat with your child as well as a review of past things learned.
